IIT Bombay: A canteen employee of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT Bombay) was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly video-recording a girls’ hostel bathroom. The incident happened late Sunday night when a student spotted a mobile phone on a window outside the bathroom of Girls Hostel 10 on the IIT Bombay campus and informed the authorities. Powai police station was informed and a team reached there. After which about five canteen employees were questioned. In which a 22-year-old canteen employee was identified as the prime suspect and arrested.

The accused’s mobile phone is with the police

Zone X Deputy Commissioner of Police Maheshwar Reddy told media persons that the mobile phone of the accused is with the police, further investigation is on and the accused will be produced in the court on Wednesday. IIT Bombay issued a statement saying that an employee of the Night Canteen was caught peeping into the bathroom of the hostel, attempting to violate the private space of the girl students. Which was caught red handed due to the vigilance of the girl students and handed over to the police. As per preliminary reports, IIT Bombay is not aware of sharing any footage from the phone seized from the criminal.

Night Canteen has been closed immediately

IIT Bombay said that the night canteen has been closed immediately as a precaution and will be opened only if it has a staff of women. Further, the pipelines used by the accused have been closed and further discussions are on with the students whether additional security measures can be taken. The accused has been arrested under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, which carries a jail term of minimum one year to a maximum of seven years. The development comes days after a ruckus broke out in Chandigarh University.
