Cyrus Mystery: The news of the death of former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry in a car accident in Maharashtra’s Palghar district earlier this month left the nation in a tizzy. Official statistics show that road accidents are quite common on this stretch of highway. The 100-km stretch of Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway between Ghodbunder in Thane and Dapchari in Palghar district has witnessed 262 accidents this year in which at least 62 people died and 192 were injured, police officials said.

Many of these accidents were due to over speeding or driver error, but officials said poor maintenance of roads, lack of proper signs and lack of speed control measures were among other reasons. are also responsible for many accidents. Since the beginning of this year, 26 people have died in 25 serious accidents on the stretch of highway near Charoti where Mistry’s car had crashed on September 4, a Maharashtra highway police official said.

The stretch of about 500 meters towards Mumbai is very dangerous.

He said that 25 people have died in 35 serious accidents in the same period in the area near Chinchoti and 11 people have lost their lives in 10 accidents near Manor. “The stretch of about 500 meters towards Chiroti and towards Mumbai is very dangerous in terms of accidents,” the official said, adding that while going towards Mumbai, the road turns before the bridge of the Surya River and the three-lane route is two-lane. but there are no suitable signs on the road to inform drivers about this in advance.

Cyrus Mistry and his friend Jehangir Pandole were killed

Mistry (54) and his friend Jehangir Pandole were killed after their car rammed into the divider of a bridge over the Surya river in Palghar. Anahita Pandole (55) and her husband Darius (60), who were driving the car, were seriously injured. Another official said that it seems that the Indian Road Congress’s safety guidelines have been ignored by those who are responsible for the maintenance of the road.

Private agency has the responsibility of maintaining the highway

He said that the road comes under the purview of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), but the maintenance responsibility lies with the private toll collecting agency. According to the official, as per the guidelines, an ambulance should be kept ready at every 30 km and a crane and patrol vehicles should also be there. The Maharashtra Police has written to the Central Road Research Institute, asking it to conduct a road safety audit, seeking expert opinion on safety measures that can be implemented in the wake of the September 4 accident.
