Automobile companies such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra and Kia saw a sharp jump in sales in August on improved semiconductor supply and increased demand on the back of the festive season. Other auto makers like Hyundai, Toyota and Skoda also saw good wholesale sales in August.

Maruti sales up 26 percent

The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) reported a 26.37 per cent increase in total sales at 1,65,173 units last month. Maruti sold a total of 1,30,699 vehicles in August 2021. Last month, the company’s sales in the domestic market increased by 30 per cent to 1,34,166 units.

36% jump in Tata sales

Tata Motors’ total sales in August rose by 36 per cent to 78,843 units. The company had sold 57,995 units in August 2021. On the other hand, total sales of Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) increased by five per cent to 62,210 units last month. Similarly, Mahindra & Mahindra’s (M&M) passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market rose 87 per cent to 29,852 units last month. Vijay Nakra, President, Automotive Division, M&M said the demand in the company’s portfolio continues to be strong.

Sales of Kia and Toyota increased

Kia India’s wholesale sales rose 33 per cent to 22,322 units last month. It had supplied 16,759 units to dealers in August 2021. In addition, Toyota Kirlaskar Motor (TKM)’s overall wholesales grew by 17 per cent to 14,959 units in August. On the other hand, Skoda Auto India’s wholesale sales increased by 10 per cent to 4,222 units in August. The company had dispatched 3,829 vehicles to dealers in August 2021.

Honda disappointed

Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) sales in the domestic market declined 30 per cent to 7,769 units in August. The company sold 11,177 vehicles in the domestic market in August 2021. However, the company’s exports increased from 2,262 units to 2,356 units in August.

Bajaj Auto sales up 49%

Bajaj Auto’s wholesales in the domestic market grew by 49 per cent to 2,56,755 units. In August 2021, this figure was 1,72,595 units. Whereas, TVS Motor Company’s two-wheeler sales in the domestic market grew by 33 per cent to 2,39,325 units as against 1,79,999 units in the same month a year ago.
