FSSAI issued instructions it is necessary for the brand selling such dairy products to write Non Dairy Products on the packet

FSSAI: Brands selling ready-made fermented soybean curd without the use of dairy goods will now be required to clearly mention ‘non-dairy products’ on the packets of their products. These new rules will come into effect from April 1 next year. This has been said in a notification issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on September 13. The notification states that ‘if fermented soyabean curd/chena is made without using dairy goods, the declaration of ‘non-dairy product’ on its label is mandatory. Apart from this, if some amount of dairy ingredients have been used in their manufacture, then it will be necessary to mention this quantity as well.

Must provide detailed information about the product

It said that the labels of these products shall mention acidity as percentage of lactic acid conforming to the standards, percentage of protein and fat by mass, percentage by total solid mass etc. FSSAI has amended the Food Safety and Standards (Food Producer Standards and Food Improvement Additives) Regulations, 2011 in exercise of the powers conferred under sections of the Food Safety and Standards Act. This regulation will now be called the Food Safety and Standards (Food Producer Standards and Food Improvement Additives) First Amendment Regulations, 2022. The proposed provisions in this will come into effect from April 1, 2023. FSSAI notification states that fermented soyabean curd/chena is made by fermentation of aqueous elements of soybean. This fermentation occurs through the mixed enrichment of lactic acid. This product may be plain, sweetened, or fragrance added.

The content should not exceed 25 percent

It states that milk or condensed milk may be added to ingredients extracted from soybeans. But in case of mixing, its quantity should not exceed 25 percent of the final product. As per the notification, fermented soybean curd/chena is also prepared by fermentation of lactic acid and mixed varieties. It can be plain, sweet or fragrance mixed. It can contain mango, orange, pineapple or other fruit. Milk/condensed milk can be re-added to the extracted material from soybeans.
