Smartphone Users Safety: Cyber Crime Incidents are increasing day by day. In such a situation, it is very important for internet users to be aware of cyber crime. Keeping this in mind, the Government of India has issued an advisory on ‘Best Practices’ that smartphone users can follow to stay safe online. Under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-in) Has released a list of dos and don’ts for citizens to download the app on their smartphone or browse online.

These 10 things will need to be kept in mind

  1. Always download the app from verified sources only. Try to download the app from playstore and app store.
  2. Always read the app details, number of downloads, ratings and user reviews as well as the details before granting necessary access before downloading the app.
  3. Do not browse untrusted websites while clicking on links provided in any unnecessary emails and SMS.
  4. Look for suspicious numbers that don’t look like real mobile phone numbers. Scammers often hide their identity by using email-to-text services to avoid revealing their real phone number.
  5. Genuine SMS messages received from banks usually contain the sender ID (includes the bank’s abbreviation) instead of the phone number in the sender information field. Take special care of this.
  6. Do your research before clicking on the link given in the message. There are a number of websites that allow anyone to find information based on a phone number.
  7. Only click on URLs that clearly point to the website domain. Be careful with short URLs, such as and tinyurl.
  8. Install antivirus and anti spyware software on your system.
  9. Be aware of the browser before providing any sensitive information such as personal details or account login details. For that you should carefully look at the lock symbol at the beginning of the website. If the lock symbol is not visible on that website, then do not share any of your important details.
  10. The customer should immediately report any abnormal activity in his account to the concerned bank so that appropriate further action can be taken.
