Congress Attacks BJP: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday took a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party over the decision to declare a holiday on the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh in Jammu and Kashmir. He asked whether the BJP would explain the “disrespect” of the conditions on the basis of which the Maharaja merged his province.

The former home minister tweeted, “BJP found the merits of Maharaj Hari Singh and declared a holiday on his birth anniversary. The most important work of Hari Singh in his whole life was that he signed the agreement of accession with India with certain conditions.

The former home minister asked, “Will the BJP give an explanation on its decision to honor Hari Singh and disregard the terms of the merger.” Chidambaram said, “As Maharaja, Hari Singh has this right. It was to speak for your people and decide their future. In the absence of the Maharaja, the public representatives can decide the future of the people.

Chidambaram made this claim

Chidambaram claimed that the August 5, 2019 judgment (abrogating most of the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution) was not a decision of the people or the elected legislature or a proper constitutional government. The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday said that Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has accepted the party’s demand to declare September 23 as a public holiday in the union territory on the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh.
