Gujarat Riots: The Supreme Court will again hear today the bail plea of activist Teesta Setalvad in the conspiracy case related to the Gujarat riots. The hearing is to begin at 2 pm. Earlier this matter was heard in the court on Thursday, where the court had asked the Solicitor General that neither UAPA nor POTA case is registered against Teesta, yet why have you kept her in custody for 2 months?

Solicitor General replied in Supreme Court

Opposing Teesta’s bail, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the matter is going on in the High Court, so you let the hearing take place there. Mehta said during this that the Supreme Court should not keep its eyes completely closed, but did not even open its eyes completely. The matter was heard by a bench of Chief Justice UU Lalit. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal appeared for Teesta, while Solicitor General Mehta appeared for Gujarat government.

Gujarat government had filed an affidavit

The Gujarat government had opposed Teesta’s bail by filing an affidavit in the Supreme Court on August 30. The government said that the FIR against Teesta is not only based on the judgment of the Supreme Court, but is also based on evidence. In the investigation conducted so far, material has been brought on record to justify the FIR, which makes it clear that Teesta had committed criminal acts in connivance with other accused to obtain political, financial and other material gains.

Gujarat Police had arrested

The Supreme Court on June 24 dismissed the petition against the SIT report giving clean chit to the then CM Narendra Modi in the 2002 Gujarat riots case. This petition was filed by Zakia Jafri. Zakia Jafri’s husband Ehsan Jafri died in these riots.

The Supreme Court had said that there is no merit in Zakia’s petition. The court had also said that Teesta, the co-petitioner in the case, played with the sentiments of Zakia Jafri. The court had asked for an inquiry into the role of Teesta. After this, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch arrested Teesta from Mumbai on June 25.
