Delhi human trafficking: According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, Delhi recorded the highest number of human trafficking cases among the eight union territories in 2021. Also, it increased by 73.5 percent as compared to 2020. According to statistics, all 509 victims of human trafficking were rescued in 2021. Most of the victims of human trafficking were from bonded labor while some of them were related to sexual abuse and petty crimes. However, none of the victims were trafficked for child pornography, begging, or removal of human organs.

Human trafficking cases see an increase in 2021

A senior Delhi Police official said that in 2020, the lockdown was implemented several times across the country due to the corona virus epidemic. “Naturally, the city saw an increase in human trafficking cases in 2021, when the movement of people gradually resumed,” he said. “Migration is also a major factor,” he said. Being a major hub for job opportunities, some dealers try to attract the youth and unemployed people by offering them lucrative lures. However, they come to know the reality after reaching the destination. Either they are not paid at all or they are paid much less than what was promised.

437 victims of human trafficking under the age of 18

According to NCRB data, 509 people were trafficked in 2021, mostly men and 143 women. In Delhi, 437 victims of human trafficking were under the age group of 18, of which 100 were girls. According to the data, in 2021, 174 people were arrested for human trafficking and chargesheets were filed against 13 people. However, no one has been convicted or acquitted by the courts.

According to a senior police officer, “Compared to other states or union territories, cases are registered quickly in Delhi. We also have the facility of online registration of complaints and every complaint is checked for veracity and accordingly. Action is taken.”
