Russia-Ukraine War: Efforts to free fighters guarding a steel plant in Mariupol, Ukraine, from Russian occupation came to a halt early Thursday. Russia agreed to release Ukrainian prisoners of war who guarded a steel plant in Mariupol during the Russian offensive in exchange for the release of a high-profile prisoner and some soldiers. Ukraine has been trying to free these prisoners for several months, and the prisoner it will release in return is an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Apart from this, he will also release 55 other prisoners of Russia.

So far Russia has not given any response

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his government had freed 215 Ukrainian citizens and foreigners from Russian occupation through mediation efforts by Turkey and Saudi Arabia. He said many of these were soldiers and officers who were facing the death penalty in Russian-held territory. However, Russian officials are yet to comment on the prisoner swap. A total of 200 Ukrainian prisoners will be released in exchange for Russia-backed opposition leader Viktor Medvedchuk. Medvedchuk is a Ukrainian citizen. Medvedchuk, 68, who hails from the oligarchy, escaped from house arrest in Ukraine several days before Russia’s invasion on February 24, but was captured again in April.

Medvedchuk is close to Putin
He was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of treason and helping a terrorist organization buy coal in the Russian-backed Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine. Medvedchuk had come in contact with Putin when he was chief of staff to former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma. Medvedchuk’s youngest daughter is considered close to Putin. Moscow authorities reacted sharply after he was taken into custody. Medvedchuk heads the political council of Ukraine’s Russia-backed Opposing Platform for Life party. It is the largest opposition group in the Parliament of Ukraine. The government has suspended the activity of the party.

Zelensky released the video
Zelensky said in a video address at night that “it is not a matter of regret to release Medvedchuk in exchange for real warriors.” His interrogation has been completed. Ukraine has got from them all the necessary information which is necessary to prove the truth in criminal proceedings.” Zelensky said that in another prisoner swap, Ukraine had given 55 Russian prisoners to them in exchange for releasing them. Five commanders were freed, who led the troops to the defense of the Ajostaal steel plant. He said many of the soldiers liberated from Russian occupation belonged to Ukraine’s Azov regiment and described them as heroes.

British citizens also released
He further said that five leaders, including Azov regiment commander Denis Prokopenko and Syatoslav Palmar, are in Turkey, where they will stay until the end of the war from a security point of view. The prisoner swap also released 10 foreign nationals, including five British nationals and two US ex-servicemen who fought wars with Ukrainian forces. He was released by Russia-backed separatists. A media video showed two British nationals Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pin talking inside a plane. “We want to let everyone know that we are out of danger and we are on our way home to be with our families,” Pinner said. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the prisoner swap. That it is “no small achievement”. “Much more remains to be done to ease the suffering caused by the war in Ukraine,” he said.
