What is the United Nations Security Council

Before knowing the mandatory conditions for being a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, let’s understand what is UNSC and when and why it was needed to be formed?… In fact, after the Second World War, to maintain peace and security around the world. For this purpose, this council was formed in the year 1945 by the United Nations Charter. World War II lasted from 1939 to 1945. The five most influential countries of the world were made permanent members. These include the US, Russia, France, Britain and China. Apart from this, 10 other countries are given temporary membership for two years as a rotation. Its headquarter is in New York.

The six main organs of the United Nations Security Council are

  • 1. United Nations Secretariat
  • 2. United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
  • 3. International Court of Justice
  • 4.United Nations Security Council (UNSC)
  • 5. United Nations Economic and Social Council
  • 6. United Nations Trusteeship Council

voting power
The decision of the UNSC is mandatory in all cases. If there is disagreement of any one of its five permanent members, the resolution is not passed. That is why it is necessary to have all the five countries in favor of any proposal. If four countries are parties to any one resolution, then the fifth country votes against the proposal by putting its veto power in it. So the offer falls. The same conditions are being applied every time India is made a permanent member of the UNSC. Here America, Russia, France and Britain give their vote in favor of India, but China does not allow it to happen every time by imposing veto power. He does not want India to become a permanent member.

India’s current capacity

Major General S Meston, retired from the army, says that at present, India fits perfectly into the broad requirements to be a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. He says that India is the seventh largest country in the world. Economically, it is the fifth largest economy in the world. India is a big democratic country. India has a good image all over the world. India is now gaining proficiency in technology as well. Military power has also become strong in the country. India is the second largest country in the world after China in terms of population. In the next few years, India’s population will be the largest in the world. Therefore, India is fully entitled to be a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

Why can’t get permanent membership
It is ironic that out of the five permanent members of the UNSC, the US, Russia, France, Britain and China, four countries are in support of India. Despite this, India is not being made a permanent member of the UNSC. Only China is against India. Every member of UANSC has veto power. Under this, if any one country opposes a proposal, then it cannot pass in the UNSC. Due to the opposition of China, India is not able to get permanent membership.

what is the option
According to Major General S Meston, if China is applying veto power every time and when the other four countries are in favor of India, then they will have to modify the veto power again. If more than two countries are in favor of a proposal, then there should not be veto power. Secondly, for this a proposal should be brought in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). In which the decision is taken by a two-thirds majority in the voting, then India can be made a permanent member.
