How to make a diamond from plastic

The SLC National Accelerator in California, USA has surprised everyone by inventing a new way to make precious diamonds from plastic bottles using lasers. Scientists have taken inspiration to make diamonds from plastic bottles from the concept of diamond rain on the planets Neptune and Uranus. Both these planets are many times larger than Earth, where there is an abundance of methane gas. Methane consists of molecules of hydrogen and carbon. As the atmospheric pressure on the earth increases, the water gets converted into steam and mixes with the clouds and rains on different parts. Similarly, on the planets Uranus and Neptune, when methane pressure increases, the bonds between hydrogen and carbon molecules break. After this, the carbon molecules present in it turn into diamonds and then there is a rain of diamonds.

Scientists used polyethylene to make diamonds from plastic bottles
Inspired by the rain of diamonds on Neptune and Uranus, the researchers used polyethylene terephthalate (PET) gas instead of methane to make diamonds from plastic bottles. In this, the plastic was heated to 10,800 degrees Fahrenheit using a high-powered optical laser. After this it became a diamond-like structure. Physics Prof. According to Dominic Krauss, the best balance between oxygen, carbon and hydrogen was observed in PET, similar to those two planets. PET is often used to make single-use plastics.

Nano diamond can be made from plastic
Scientists have also told how to make nano diamonds from these plastic bottles. In this, nano diamonds can be made from laser-generated shockwaves in PET plastic. Now nano diamonds are made into a bunch of carbon or diamonds and exploded in it. Then this nano diamond is used in polishing.

Natural diamonds are formed by crystallization of carbon atoms.
Scientists said that three billion years ago, natural diamonds were formed due to intense heat and pressure at a depth of 150 to 200 kilometers on the Earth’s surface. Because under such conditions the carbon atoms crystallize and turn into diamond.
