  • Will be able to withstand strong Ukrainian attack
  • Re-occupied large areas in the Northeast Kharkiv region
  • Ukrainian army appears to be occupying eastern Ukraine

Russia-Ukraine War: Western defense officials and analysts expressed hope on Saturday that Russian forces are building a new defense line in northeastern Ukraine as Ukrainian forces attempt to make further advances in the eastern region. The British Defense Ministry told daily intelligence that the line was likely to lie between the Oskil River and Svatov, about 150 kilometers southeast of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city. The Russian army is preparing a new front line after the Ukrainian army’s counter-attack in the war broke the earlier front line. Ukraine has broken an earlier Russian front line and recaptured large areas in the northeastern Kharkiv region, which borders Russia.

Ukrainian army trying to attack

The British military said it was unclear whether Russian forces would be able to withstand another strong Ukrainian attack. According to the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War, Ukrainian forces are continuing to cross the Oskil River in the Kharkiv region as they attempt to counterattack on Russian-occupied territory. In its report on Saturday, the institute said satellite images showed Ukrainian forces had crossed over to the east bank of Oskil in Kupiyansk and deployed artillery there. This river flows south from Russia towards Ukraine.

Russia again intensified bombing
A video circulated on the Internet on Saturday also showed Ukrainian forces occupying land in war-torn eastern Ukraine. On the other hand, Russian forces continued to fire missiles and fire on Ukrainian cities and villages. Regional governor Oleh Sinihubov said a Russian missile attack caught fire in Kharkiv’s industrial area early Saturday. Sinihubov said the remains of the missile showed that Russia had fired surface-to-air S-300 missiles at the city.

The S-300 is designed to destroy missiles or aircraft in the air, not targets on the ground. Analysts say Russia’s use of the S-300 missile for ground attacks suggests it has lost some precision weapons in the months-long war.
