The Great Wall of China: Authorities in China’s Shandong province have passed a regulation to protect the Great Wall of Qi, the oldest existing section of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lawmakers approved the regulation at the 38th session of the Standing Committee of the 13th Shandong Provincial People’s Congress on Wednesday and will take effect from January 1, 2023, Xinhua news agency reported. The Great Wall of Qi, with a total length of 641 km, was built during the Spring and Autumn period (770 BC–476 BC) and the Warring States period (475 BC–221 BC).

What is in this new law

The new regulation specifies the responsibilities of the various departments and emphasizes regional cooperation on the protection and use of the Great Wall of Qi. It said local governments would establish a dynamic conservation system to monitor the Great Wall, its associated infrastructure and the surrounding environment, using remote sensing satellites, drones, information platforms and other technological means. According to the regulation, tourism services featuring the Great Wall will be further standardized in order to balance security and development.

Law is essential for the protection of the Great Wall of Qi

Qi Yanan, an official with the provincial justice department, said the security situation of the Great Wall of Qi faces many challenges and, therefore, it is necessary to provide a solid legal guarantee for its conservation efforts. The Great Wall begins in Shanhaiguan in Hebei Province in the east and ends at Jiayuguan in Gansu Province in the west. Its main part consists of walls, horse tracks, watch towers and walled shelters and includes forts and passages along the wall.
