Talibani Prisoner US: A senior Taliban member claimed on Monday that he was released by the US in exchange for the release of a US citizen imprisoned in Afghanistan. Narcotics leader and Taliban member Bashir Noorzai told reporters in Kabul that he spent 17 years and six months in a US prison. At the same time, Taliban officials have claimed that Noorzai has been released from the US prison in Guantanamo, but those statements could not be confirmed.

Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaki also addressed the press conference along with Noorzai. Muttaki welcomed the swap, saying it marked a “new era” in US-Taliban relations. Muttaki said that on January 31, 2020, former US naval and civil contractor Mark Frericks, kidnapped from Afghanistan, has been released. Frerix was last seen in a video earlier this year in which he is seen pleading for his release so that he can be reunited with his family. This video was shared by ‘The New Yorker Magazine’.

Frerix’s release not confirmed

There has been no independent confirmation of Frerix’s release, nor has the US said anything about it. “This is a new chapter between Afghanistan and the US,” Muttaki told a news conference in Kabul. It can open new doors between the two countries. “It shows that all problems can be resolved through dialogue and I thank the teams on both sides who worked hard to get to this point,” he said.

Fredericks from Illinois

Frerix, a resident of Illinois, is believed to have been taken hostage by the Taliban affiliated with the Haqqani network. US officials tried to get him released, but were unsuccessful. In the video that Frerix appeared in for the first time since the kidnapping, he said it was recorded in November last year. After the video was released, the FBI declined to comment on its authenticity, but Frerix’s sister, Charlene Cikora, issued a statement thanking the Taliban for the video.

Taliban released video on social media

The Taliban also released a brief video on social media on Monday that shows Noorzai being received by top Taliban officials, including Muttaki, as he arrives at Kabul airport. Referring to the Taliban in Kabul, Noorzai said she was happy to see “Mujahideen brothers”. “I wish the Taliban more success,” he said. I hope this prisoner swap will lead to peace between Afghanistan and America because the American has been released and now I am free.
